Planning the honeymoon is sometimes the most exciting part of getting married. You have an entire world to choose from, so why shouldn't you take that opportunity to try something totally new? Below is a list of some of the most beautiful, but unexpected places to go on your honeymoon. Most of them have a personal meaning to me because of my wonderful and well-travelled friends and family - so I can promise you they are AMAZING.

Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre is a line of seaside villages, made up of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, cinque terre, italy, island, monterosso al mare, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingand Riomaggiore. I had the opportunity to visit bown Monterosso and Vernazza and I am still dreaming about the crystal clear water, beautiful clusters of homes perched upon the cliffs, and the unbelievable views of the Italian Riviera during my hikes. I had never heard of Cinque Terre before arriving, as my friend planned our trip – but I fell in love with everything I saw, and transportation between islands is just a train ride away.

Tresco Island

tresco island, england, UK, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingI love England and English history, so Tresco Island is this mystical island of my middle school dreams. It’s a small island located off the coast of Cornwall that is actually family owned. Tresco Island is known for its beaches, its spas and its gardens. The weather is mild, with summer and fall temperatures ranging from the 60’s to 70’s. It’s not going to be a trip where you’re necessarily spending your days sunbathing, but it’s a private, relaxing and truly unique place.

Nantucket

nantucket, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingI LOVE Nantucket. It’s beautiful and welcoming all year round. The food scene and the nightlife are beyond fantastic. (I recommend Nautilus – it’s life-changing.) It’s a little pricey, but it’s always worth the experience - plus it's super easy to get to! I grew up having the opportunity to spend time here and somehow just being on the island makes you feel truly at peace.

Nice, France

France, Nice, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingNice is hands down, one of my top 3 places to visit. It’s this thriving, welcoming community with fantastic shops, restaurants and views. I cannot tell you all enough how life changing my experience was there. It’s hot and the ocean is crystal clear and warm – plus you can drink wine at any point of the day. PSA – Nice does consist of pebble beaches rather than sand – so bring some cushions.

Alaska

alaska, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingThis was inspired by my brother – who is a major outdoorsman. He and my family took a trip to Alaska and all they could do for months was rave about the trip. They even jet-skied through glaciers! Maybe Alaska isn’t for everyone, but it’s a unique place to go if you’re a nature enthusiast.

Nosara, Costa Rica

costa rica, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingI went to Nosara when I was 15 and I have never been able to forget it. It’s this unbelievable small town in Costa Rica that is relatively un-touristy. It has a bustling little area of shops, spas and bars where dancing goes all night. Nosara is also a great place for surfers, as it’s known for its perfect waves. You can ride horses, explore the rainforest, go zip lining – the opportunities are endless. The people are so kind and welcoming. You’ll never want to leave.

Algarve, Portugal

portugal, honeymoon destinationThis was based on a suggestion from a friend of mine living in Spain.  It’s the southernmost region of Portugal and is a popular European tourist area because of it’s beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean. There are beautiful cliffs and coves for visitors to explore, plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as a lively community that is rich in history. I’ll meet you there ok?

Key West, Florida

florida, key west, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingI think Key West is the best place in the US, besides New Hampshire (and Maine of course!) It’s definitely touristy – but it can also be the most private little getaway. Rent a little bungalow, hop on your bike and explore those beautiful beaches. If you’re like me and you love to eat out and dance – the downtown area has more than you can imagine. Key West is a funky little island, full of artists, writers and performers and it’s full of history. (Anyone a Hemingway fan?) The spirit of Key West is truly intoxicating.

Ko Samui, Thailand

thailand, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingI have always dreamed of going to Thailand – and Ko Samui was one of the first places suggested by multiple travel sites. Ko Samui is Thailand’s second largest island, off the east coast. There are secluded lagoons to visit, Buddhist temples to explore – plus miles of beautiful beaches and dense rainforest. Seriously just look at the photos and try not to get teary eyed.

Reykjavik, Iceland

iceland, honeymoon, honeymoon destination, unique, travel, weddingSo many of my friends have visited Iceland, and have nonstop told me that “I HAVE to go there.” Reykjavik is fantastic because not only is it a short, affordable flight from the US, but it’s full of fun sights and activities that could be perfect for a couple that is outdoorsy. Explore the Blue Lagoon, go hiking, horseback riding, ice climbing and watch for the northern lights. According to my friends, the city itself is fun and unique, with a great food scene and nightlife. My biggest suggestion would be renting a van from Happy Campers, to explore all that Iceland has to offer. You'll save hundreds on hotels and you'll have a warm camper to sleep in wherever you go! Also - My friend Xander suggests eating whale blubber as well. (Well - maybe pass on that…)
