Making it in the photography business can be difficult – the typical consumer new england wedding, photographer, photojournalism, rustic wedding(like myself) often times can find it hard to distinguish what sets each photographer apart so sometimes photographers are chosen by convenience rather than style or personality. Making it in the photography business at age 20 is even more difficult – unless you’re Morgan of Morgan Lynn Portraits. Morgan does family portraits, engagement and wedding photos, shower photos and more. I had the chance to get to know Morgan and in the process, learned just how important it truly is to find the RIGHT photographer for you. Full disclosure, I had no idea how young she was until about halfway through our conversation. She was incredibly articulate and spoke with a mature intelligence about the photography field and her style. While I am not much older than her myself, I truly was blown away by her confidence, bubbly attitude and entrepreneurial spirit.

How did your passion for photography begin?

Morgan became interested in photography her freshman year in high school. “For some reason I was drawn to the camera; I didn’t want to be in the pictures, but I loved being behind the camera,” she explained, laughing. Personally, I can’t relate – I am a HUGE ham for the camera. Morgan loved using the camera to show her creativity – so she saved up for her first camera not long after freshman year. By her senior year, Morgan had made her photography into a business – which she credits to an incredibly supportive community that encouraged and believed in her. Ever since, she has continued to make bookings nearly every weekend – growing through excellent word of mouth recommendations.

Morgan’s style is known as “photojournalism,” as it’s important to her to tell that story through photographs, rather than “just taking a picture of a pose I told them to do.” Morgan said that she also "tends to be much more natural light oriented." She is always trying to make the most of each space - like always putting the bride or her gown next to the biggest window. She rarely uses a flash (unless the space calls for it) and if she does, it's never directly on clients - she will reflect it off the walls to create more of an "illuminated" effect.

How do you set yourself apart in your industry?

I was incredibly curious about this because I would imagine it’s incredibly hard to really distinguish yourself as a photographer amongst a clientele that is likely to just want beautiful pictures and is less partial to who takes them. Morgan didn’t disagree, but she morgan3-193001-edited.jpgsaid setting herself apart “is really about personality and going the extra mile for your clients.” She said it’s important to her to get personal with her clients in order to find what they really want out of their photos and how they want their love story to be translated. She told me about how she makes sure to do something special for each client - such as making one bride a personalized picture guest book for free so the bride could have her engagement photographs at her bridal shower. She makes sure to sit down with every client to make sure she truly understands his or her vision and from there, she will create a detailed timeline for their day. This timeline, especially for a hectic wedding day, ends up being a crucial part of helping everything go smoothly and helps make sure the couple gets every shot they wanted.

What advice do you have for couples looking to book a photographer?

“Take the time to really get to know and interview your photographer options,” Morgan urges. “Your wedding is such a special day and you’re going to want someone who you get along with to be there, being apart of it.” This piece of advice makes a ton of sense to me because your wedding day is so personal and the photographs taken are likely going to be very intimate. Morgan explains that so many people seem to think that all photographers are the same – they have the same style and will behave the same way. ‘That’s just not the case – everyone is different and it’s important to find the right chemistry with your photographer.”

Overall, it was an absolute pleasure speaking to Morgan. She was sweet, funny and incredibly professional about her craft. She left me with this – “I aim to capture 3 things for my clients – joy, simplicity and personality. I want to use my photographs to truly show who each person is and what they are feeling.”
