So if the name of this company wasn't enough of a draw for you, then maybe the fact that they make amazing, natural and organic beauty products will catch your attention. Introducing Naked But Happy, an up-and-coming Maine beauty company started by Melissa De Silvia and her daughter, Alyssa.
Tell me about Naked but Happy Soap Co.
Naked but Happy is a self-started mother-daughter company from Oxford, Maine. "Our vision is to reduce the toxic overload many beauty products contain by offering safe, natural, local and organic ingredients when possible."
Tell me more about your products
Naked but Happy makes a wide variety of handcrafted soaps that feature the highest quality goat’s milk or glycerin bases; along with, pure essential oils and organic nuts, oats, zest and vegetable based oils. These high quality, natural soaps reflect the beauty of Maine and are named to reflect that inspiration. "We also make handmade lye soaps using a hot process approach that creates a gentle but effective soap. We seek the highest quality ingredients and use a variety of oils, fresh water and pure food grade essential oils." Naked But Happy offers a line of beard products - beard oils, beard soaps and beard shampoo - that use jojoba and almond oils with fresh essential oil blends. In terms of household cleaning, Naked but Happy offers Green Cleaners that clean anything from the kitchen sink, countertops, bathroom and floors to the inside of the car. This streak free, multipurpose cleaner is great for mirrors and contains all natural, toxic free ingredients. "We also carry laundry detergent and fresh air sprays." WHAT CAN'T THESE WOMEN DO?! "One of our more popular items is our 3-4-1 cream. This is combination of natural oils, nut butters, tea tree and lavender oils that can be used for face, fingers and fanny. It is a great make up remover, helps keep pimples away and soothes irritation. For busy parents, it also can be used as a hand cream or diaper cream. Along with it’s anti-wrinkle and antiseptic properties, it has a mild, natural sunscreen effect."
What inspired you to start Naked but Happy?
"Naked but Happy is a way of life for my family. We tend to be sensitive to chemicals. When my children were small, the “natural” movement had not really begun in Maine. If I wanted natural products, I had to find ways of making them myself. As my daughter hit her late teens, she began making her own products. Her creations were less expensive and better than what was offered locally. However, we looked at local markets and could not find a venue for our products. Last October, with only a few products made, I decided to prove to my daughter (and myself) that we could find a market for our products. We purchased a booth at local craft fairs and developed a website. This led to our business at the Norway Farmer’s Market at the Old Squire’s Green in Norway."
Where do you draw inspiration for your products?
"Our inspiration for Naked but Happy Soap Co. is deeply rooted in the beauty of Maine. Growing up in the foothill of Maine, we often visited Perhams Mineral Shop, which inspired many of our soaps. Our Popham Beach bar creates the feeling of the beach while our Norway Lake bar offers the brilliant blue hues that are often seen in the evenings. We seek to capture to beauty of Maine in the texture, colors and scents of our soaps for others to enjoy."
Where do you pull your ingredients?
"We look for ingredients that are natural and wholesome through connections with local businesses. Our raw milk (for our Raw Milk and Honey bar) comes from High View Farm in Harrison. Our Lavender Essential Oil is from Pen-Y-Bryn Lavender Farm in Hebron, Maine. And we are working on a Tallow Soap with Mountain View Farm in Harrison, Maine. Alyssa is very focused on environmental factors and provides feedback about whether our ingredients are drawn from environmentally friendly and sustainable means."
What is your vision for the future?
The dynamic duo of Naked But Happy hopes to start producing bulk orders to be sold in stores, as well as in hotels or inns. While the company is only 6 months old, I tend to believe there is no stronger force than a mother and daughter working towards a single goal.
